Torque Sensor VS Cadence Sensor

Many of our e-bike models have switchable Cadence & Torque Sensors, which means they have both! This means, you don't have to settle with one or the other. 


Cadence Sensor


A cadence sensor detects that the cranks are turning.

  • Start pedaling → motor turns on.

  • Stop pedaling → motor turns off.

  • The motor usually provides a preset level of power based on your assist setting.

Pros

  • Affordable.

  • Easy to use.

  • Great if you want the bike to do most of the work.

Cons

  • Can feel jerky when starting or stopping.

  • Less natural on hills and technical terrain.

  • Often gives the same assistance whether you're pedaling lightly or hard.

Torque Sensor
A torque sensor measures the force you apply to the pedals.

  • Push harder → motor gives more power.

  • Ease up → motor reduces assistance.

Pros

  • Smooth, intuitive ride.

  • Better control on hills and trails.

  • Feels much more like riding a normal bike with "super legs."

  • Typically more efficient and extends battery range.

Cons

  • Costs more.

  • Requires some rider effort to get full assistance.

Which Should You Choose?


Choose a cadence sensor if:

  • You want maximum assistance with minimal effort.

  • You're on a tighter budget.

  • You mainly ride on paved roads and bike paths.

Choose a torque sensor if:

  • You want a natural cycling experience.

  • You ride hills frequently.

  • You care about fitness and efficiency.

  • You're buying a mid-drive e-bike or a higher-end model.

Simple Analogy

  • Cadence sensor: Like a light switch—pedaling turns the motor on.

  • Torque sensor: Like a dimmer switch—the harder you pedal, the more assistance you get.

For most riders who enjoy cycling and want the bike to feel responsive and natural, a torque sensor is generally considered superior. For riders who simply want easy transportation with minimal effort, a cadence sensor can be perfectly adequate and saves money.
